Meeting of the Elderly Core Leaders

The Diocesan Committee for the Elderly of Nakhonsawan organized a meeting for the elderly core leaders on "Dialogue and experience sharing among the elderly" during 24-25 June at the Rung Arun Resort, Singburi with 35 elderly core leaders participating. Rev. Phairat Sriprasert, secretary general of the Catholic Commission for Health Pastoral Care was the speaker on "Pastoral direction Year 2000 of the Catholic Church in Thailand on the Elderly" and "Spirituality of the work on the elderly in line with the Catholic teaching".

Participating elderly people came from the following parishes: St. Ann Cathedral, Holy Name of Jesus - Singburi, St. Luke - Lopburi, St. Nicholas - Pitsanulok, St. Joseph - Tak and St. Peter - Tak.

On the issue of team-work formation the speaker said that there are 2 types of the team: namely, a small team which consists of 4-5 people, whereas a big team consists of more than 12 people. Team work is very important for the work achievement. Elements of the team administration are as follows:

(1) Personnel resources (2) Material/Equipment (3) Informative data (4) Good management which consists of:
4.1 Decision on the objective
4.2 Decision on the activities
4.3 Decision on the procedure
4.4 Make the evaluation together as a team. Reward, if any, should be given to the whole team.
Each team must have a leader. Hence, the leader must possess necessary qualities which consist of the following qualifications: 1. He/she must be a respectable person, open, just, do what is promised and able to keep confidential matters, 2. Must have experiences, 3. Must understand the frame work of time, etc.
Besides, the Provincial Health Officer of Singburi also gave a talk on "Guidelines for the Elderly Groups and Role of the Group Leaders". He said: "Of the past, Thai society has always given importance to the elderly. They are the point of reference to any given family, giving their valuable experiences and being the foundation of society. In order to obtain benefits from them a forum should be set up for them to be able to carry out joint activities together".
The process of group establishment should be as follows: 1. Collect members 2. Pick up a name of the group 3. Establish address of the office 4. Define the objective 5. Establish rules and regulations 6. Establish the structure 7. Design the slogan 8. Design the activities. Members of the group consist of: (1) Ordinary members aged more than 60 years (2) Extra-ordinary members with 49-59 years of age.
