Catholic
Committee on AIDS
|
In the
past two decades, AIDS has been spreading all across the world at
an alarming rate. Thailand is no exception when the first case of
HIV positive person was identified in 1984. The highest infection
rate was official reported in 1991. There are so many people infected
with HIV and AIDS patients as well as affected people. It is, therefore,
necessary to address and cure AIDS and stop further spread of HIV.
Despite efforts of every sector in Thai society to launch campaign
on prevention or care of AIDS patients at different stages, impacts
of AIDS do not decrease, but even become more critical and yield
other impacts on society, economy and spiritual life, especially
in regard to impacts on human rights, such as right to information,
access to medicines and care, and right to employment, etc.

|
The
Catholic Church has started to work seriously on AIDS by setting
up a special body to directly address AIDS problems in 1990 under
the name of "Catholic Committee on AIDS" to work with
the target groups of people living with HIV and s ADIS Patients.
The primary objective is to motivate the Church to be aware of and
interested in working on AIDS through promotion, support and co-ordination.
|
|
The
task and role of Catholic Committee on AIDS is to build network
on AIDS with Catholic organisations and co-ordinate with concerned
state agencies and private sector, as well as providing necessary
services corresponding to the need and local context, and giving
HIV/AIDS prevention education along Catholic teachings.
|
|
The
Church is aware of the urgency of AIDS situation in society and
its mission entrusted by God in involving in dialogue with brothers
and sisters in society, especially the poor, the less-fortunate
and the abandoned.
