Meeting of the Catholic Organizations working on the North-East Health on 9 March 2007 at Baan Niramol, Khonkaen
This is the first meeting in 2007 with the purpose of following up on the issue of AIDS situation, our activities, problems encountered by the concerned Catholic institutions, including a brain-storming session on planning and developing the potential of health staff and volunteers. Representatives from 10 different groups participate in this meeting. They share their experiences to learn about what each group got what from each respective meeting and what is new. Their plan of action is as follows:
BEAN is an NGO working on the issue of AIDS. It consists of an group of volunteers joining together to assist foreign private volunteers who come to work without any official registration. The Rak Thai Foundation is the coordinator. They mainly work on the issue of human trafficking on the border connecting Thailand with Laos and Cambodia. They also provide knowledge about health through dialogue with shop owners. Baan Phai Jai is also a member of this organization.
Sr. Praiwan reports that the federation of female religious is also working on the same issue of human trafficking in Nongkhai, Tharae, Pataya and Chiengrai.
It is also reported by Sr. Pranee that the Laotian people who came across the river to work in Nongkhai have no one to assist them. The Good Shepherd Sisters have opened a law office to help them with legal cases. The meeting suggests that it would be a good thing if this office can coordinate with other related institutions.
With regards to the AIDS situation the trend is that the new cases are on the rise and the infected ones are more short-lived, such as at the Dan Khunthod hospital, where Sr. Mila reports that a 13 year old girl is HIV-contracted and shi is also pregnant.
In the province of Kalasin there are 2 new HIV cases. They claim that they use condom every time but the wife is found pregnant. It is also reported that the provincial health authority prohibits the use of the oval-shaped condom.
Sr. Praiwan informs that Sisters of Lover of the Cross will expand its mission to the 6 mountain ethnic groups who dwell in the Chiengmai slums. They do not have identity cards. Their station will be at Baan Phorn Sawan where it will be an overnight accommodation for the hill tribe people who come to work in the city of Chiengmai and will be the center of education and child care in the day time.
Ms. Phornphan voices that Baan Nijjanjkroh has now separated itself from Mother Theresa Home. The former will take care of the AIDS issue while the latter will be responsible for the children living with HIV.
There is an exchange of ideas in terms of assistance toward the occupation of the people living with HIV. In sum, helping the occupation we should not forget about their spiritual aspect, an occupation should be for the whole family and that working as a group would be more successful than as an individual, promoted occupation should be what one likes and is skillful in order to guarantee sustainability, supported occupation should not duplicate with activities already performed by others, credit union should be promoted and established, grouping together and group enterprises should be encouraged, such as collective farming and produce sharing and not without special consideration for the weak, loaned out capital should start from a small amount with an increase when the performance meets with success, focus on the sufficiency economy and stress on the personal technical know-how.
On the observational trip the meeting shows interest in 3 kinds of the exposure:
1. Occupation/sufficiency economy at Ratchatani Ashoke, Ubonratchathani.
2. Community work at Payao.
3. Caring for the people living with HIV and AIDS together with the HIV network at Rayong.
On spiritual renewal: the meeting proposes the Camillian Farm in
Kanjanaburi asking Rev. Phairat to be the coordinator.
On meeting of the network executive committee for the north east during June - August:Conference by the end of June at Ubonrat Dam. Spiritual renewal in the Buddhist way - contact the Nun (Sansanee).
As regards the project of orphans living with HIV to be accepted by the community, the meeting show their keen interest and proposes that the central committee draft up the project for their consideration, because the project can be adjusted to fit in the activities of the Catholic institutions working on AIDS. It will show a clear collaboration of the community, the network, the development of potential of the staff and volunteers and working with a clear policy. If every institution can do this sustainability can certainly be realized.
