AIDS Plan for 2007
The Catholic sub-committee on AIDS organized its annual first meeting on 28 February 2007 at the 5th Floor meeting room of the Bangkok Archdiocesan Social Center to set up planning for activities for the year 2007. They also discussed about management of the "Development of Potential of Children with HIV/AIDS" project.
The meeting was chaired by Rev. Giovanni Contarin, president of the sub-committee, with participation of representatives of the Catholic institutions working on AIDS. Important agenda of the meeting are as follows:
In regards to the 'Development of the potential of children with HIV/AIDS' project there are now 5 institutions which are financially supported, namely: 1. Baan Mitarthorn 2. Baan Lorenzo 3. Camillian Social Center, Rayong 4. Institute for Pastoral Care of people with HIV, Kalasin 5. Suthasini Noi-in foundation for children and youth, Yasothorn. Currently there are 138 people under this project. Mr. Rungroj Tangsurakit is the project coordinator.
Disbursement of funds to the above 5 institutes is made bi-monthly in the exchange of activity report and actual expenditure details submitted to the coordinator in order to receive the next disbursement.
Rev. Giovanni said that the important task of this project is not only developing the potential of children with HIV/AIDS to enjoy a better standard of physical and spiritual life but also that the staff taking care of these children have a correct knowledge in caring for those children.
The fact that this project stresses correct knowledge on the part of carers is because this group of orphans are in need of special love and need the kind of development relevant to their respective ages. They should have access to all the information in order to take care of themselves and be able to protect their right, including the ability to plan their own life in order to enable them to live in the society with happiness and with a good quality of life. Last but not least is that these children will be an asset for the future development of Thailand.
Besides, the meeting reviews all the activities supported by CRS between January - September 2007 as follows:

A Caritas representative from Germany who came to visit the HIVB/AIDS situation in Thailand commented that in certain areas there sill exist discrimination against children with HIV and children affected by AIDS. Hence, he has the idea of giving support in the campaign in order to let the community accept the children living with HIV. He expects that an amount of EU 12,000 for a year will be granted. If the project proves successful it will be extended into 3 years. His office will coordinate with member organizations to have a meeting to write up the project.
