After one year of support and caring for the HIV children?
As earlier informed the Catholic Committee on AIDS has been trying to assist Catholic institutions with the asylum establishment to help the orphans living with HIV with the intention to uplift the quality of life of the children by means of both direct and indirect education. The children are also physically looked after with efficiency. The beneficiary HIV children are in the age range of 0-18 years.
We have made the survey of the said Catholic asylums since 2005 to write up the project proposal to the donors and we have received the amount of 13 million Baht for a period of 3 years. There are 173 children in this program from 5 different Catholic asylums, namely: Baan Mitatorn -Chiengdao, Baan Lorenzo - Panatnikom, Suthsini Noi-in Foundtion-Yasotorn, HIV Center (Daughters of Charity)-Kalasin, and Social Center-Rayong. We started providing financial support since January 2007 with stress on the following dimensions:
1 Provide support in terms of clothes, food, medicine, education and health care. Each child will be provided with 2,100 Baht per month.
2 Building up the potential of each child, education both formally and informally, sight-seeing, meeting every other month and an evaluation at every six-month period.
3 Building up the potential of carers through training in child development, child psychology, etc.

From the past evaluation of most of the asylums are found with the following problems:

1 Frequent change of staff causing disruption in the operation, children are confused.
2 Children are emotionally confused, especially the youth.
3 Weak health of the children affect their education.
4 Children miss the opportunity of education because of the community's rejection.
5 Carers lack psychological knowledge and experience in the child care.

After having been supported financially and technically in the development of the potential of the children and the carers, children are better taken care of with love. Several gaps are filled both in the physical and mental perspectives. Right now we are ready to establish an alliance of children living with HIV which is very much favored by the children, because they want friends; they want to learn and exchange their experiences regarding the way of normal living in the society; they want to learn about taking medicine against virus, about having a family, about self-care and about how not to spread the virus to others. This is all good and we want to support this idea. We are going to start this camping project on 1-5 April 2008. The themes are already proposed by the children themselves.
They are:
The anti-virus medicine
How to take care of one's health
Meditation/Samadhi on the beach
General problems of the contemporary youth.

From the bi-monthly meetings we have discussed about the works, problems, problem solution and the issue of child development we find that the children under our program have developed in all areas:

Physical Development: Children receive the anti-virus medicine and learn how to use it properly. They receive food of proper ingredients and they learn about the sexual hygiene enabling them to take care of themselves.

Spiritual Development: The children receive love and care from the carers. There are recreational activities that cope up with abusive temperament enabling the children to be kind and help those who are weaker.
Intellectual Development: Children have the opportunity to attend special classes in which they are unable to catch up so that they are able to build up their own talent for further income earning such as music, handicraft, language and computer.
Social Development: Children are able to expose themselves in the public, able to live with other people and, most importantly, they are able to fully show their own ideas.
With the children's continual development it gives pleasure and satisfaction to the Catholic Institution administrators to have participated in this program, because not only the children but their own way of operation are also developed, especially in terms of operation management, activity planning, data compilation, activity and financial report.
