Sex education, Seminar
Sex, seen through the eyes of a Catholic
"Lack of respect towards sex is tantamount to no respect towards God"

It is quite an alarm to find that the Thai teenagers of today have distorted ideas and unacceptable sexual behavior. They use sex irresponsibly for commercial purposes causing unwanted pregnancy, abortion, child rejection, divorce, STD, AIDS, prostitution, juvenile crimes, etc. All these maladies are increasing daily reflecting the misconception and confusion about sex among the teenagers.

The irresponsible media is only adding the value and vision of sex as a means of physical pleasure. Because of this, the Catholic Commission for Health, the Catholic Commission for Family and the Department of Family Promotion of the Bangkok Archdiocese, realizing the value and dignity of human life, join hands together in the organizing of a seminar under the theme:"Sex: seen through the eyes ofa Catholic" on 23-25 April 2005 at the Pastoral Training Center with 88 participants coming from all sectors of priests, religious, teachers and laity involved in the education of children.
Topics of the seminar consist of "Value and dignity of sex and the human life", "Analysis of the sex situations" by Rev. Banjong Santisukniran and Rev. Siranon Sanpetch, "The meaning of sex" by Dr. Sataporn Jinarat, and "Catholics and the sexual morality and sexual deviation" by Rev. Cherdchai Lertjitlekha.
The issue of sexual deviation is of particular interest to the participants as deviated sexual behavior appears to be more apparent today. Most of the participants work with the youth. Hence, this topic is beneficial to them in their work with this group.
An open forum gives the opportunity for the participants to exchange their ideas, work experiences and ways of solving the problems. The speakers are at hand to answer all their questions on the issue of sex seen through the eyes of the Catholic.
An inquiry was made regarding the handbook for sex education to protect the unwarranted sexual behavior among the school children. This is the responsibility of the Catholic Education Council, the Commission for Health and the Commission for the Family. Br. Visit Srivichairat, secretary general of the Catholic Education Council explains that his education council is in process of preparing such a handbook and that other related handbooks are also being prepared, namely: 1. Education and the tripartite pastoral care, i.e. home, parish and school, and 2. Moral formation for new personnel of the Catholic schools.
Rev. Banjong further gives his opinion regarding sex that "God creates human beings according to His image. God creates sex which is different but complimentary. Hence, lack of respect towards sex means also no respect towards God, because man separates his body from soul resulting in being less human, but paying interest only to the body forgetting about his soul, thus causing the imbalance and imperfection of the human being".
